Before you apply: how to read a recruitment notice

Check eligibility, dates, fees and the correct application route before spending money on a form or a journey.

01

Start with the advert, not the headline

A short job headline cannot tell you whether you are eligible. Open the recruiting institution’s own recruitment page, then the full advertisement, annexures and any later corrigendum. Match the advertisement number, post and recruitment year. A direct-recruitment form and a deputation form from the same employer are not interchangeable.

Keep a copy of the original notice and check the board again before submitting. An old PDF can remain online after a cancellation or an extension. Likewise, an ‘Apply’ button on a standing scheme page is not proof that this year’s window is open.

Quick check

  • Does the official board link to this exact advertisement?
  • Is there a later extension, correction or cancellation for the same reference number?
  • Is the application open now, rather than merely announced?
02

Separate essential requirements from preferences

Read words such as ‘essential’, ‘desirable’, ‘and’ and ‘or’ carefully. A preferred higher degree is not automatically a compulsory qualification. Conversely, a degree does not replace a mandatory typing, shorthand, licence or experience requirement. If several alternative qualification routes are listed, check every condition within the route that actually applies to you.

Calculate age on the date printed in the notice—not automatically on today’s date or the closing date. The age cutoff, qualification cutoff and application deadline can be different. Use only the relaxation rules stated for that recruitment; a familiar rule from another vacancy is not enough. Being shown a notice on your state portal does not establish domicile eligibility or guarantee a posting in your state.

Quick check

  • Can you document the exact essential qualification and required subject?
  • Does your certificate or experience meet the specified cutoff?
  • Do the nationality, category, domicile or language conditions apply to you?
03

Keep three dates separate

Write down the application deadline, any separate fee deadline, and the interview or examination date. A later examination date does not extend applications. When the notice states a time, use that time in Indian Standard Time. If it gives only a date, do not assume a guaranteed 11:59 pm closing hour; submit early and check the live official form.

For example, the Supreme Court’s October 2026 Senior Personal Assistant advertisement separates qualification and age conditions from the online application window, and lists compulsory shorthand and typing skills. This is an example of how to read a notice, not an assurance that the vacancy is still open when you read this guide.

Quick check

  • Is the fee refundable? Are bank charges extra?
  • Is payment only one step, with final submission still required?
  • Have you saved the completed acknowledgement, not just a payment receipt?
04

Use the right route and keep proof

Enter the application through the link published by the employer. A linked application service can have a different domain, so follow the chain from the official board rather than trusting a forwarded link. Never pay an intermediary who promises selection. Northeast Career does not collect a recruitment fee or submit an application on your behalf.

Before final submission, compare your name, date of birth, category and qualifications with the supporting records. Check whether editing is allowed afterwards. Save the application number, acknowledgement and the version of the notice you used. On a shared computer, sign out and remove your personal downloads from that computer after saving your own secure copy. If two official documents disagree on a critical rule, ask the issuing institution for clarification rather than choosing the more convenient version.

Official references and worked examples

The examples were checked on 24 October 2026. Dates and rules belong to the individual notice. A linked example can close or change after that date.
